Need help on my video game tree of tranquility!?

okay..... so i got my new game today. and to check your relationship status u get on the main menu but u have to get a wii controller thingy tht looks like a gamecube controller well i have the regular remote but not the one shaped like a gamecube controller. how do i get to to the menu or atleast how to check the relationship status plz be specific!!
