My dog has Hot Spots, first time this happens, I don't know what to do. Will it get better?

I know that it isn't uncommon for diet to cause hot-spots, or an Allergy to something in the dogs environment. If I give Bear anything with grain in it, he'll have several hot spots within a day or two.
