Clarify the misnomer "Cell" please?

What exactly did Robert Hooke see in the cell? Empty pores, right? And he called them "cells". How the hell did he see the cells as "pores" when clearly a cell is Not a pore? Was it because of the microscope? I know, real dumb and stupid question, but I'm So freaking confused and I need help, urgently. Thank you. :)
